South Africa’s largest electricity consumers are becoming increasingly agitated at the fact that they are the first and only port of call when the power system becomes distressed, as it did in late February. Protocols are in place for Eskom to effectively demand that energy-intensive businesses reduce their loads by 10% during such emergencies. The upshot, though, is lower industrial and mining output and, ultimately, lower growth, fewer jobs and reduced investor confidence.
