The South African Property Owners' Association (Sapoa) on Wednesday urged all stakeholders in the local property industry to interrogate and comment on a new soon-to-be-released green building rating system.

The Green Building Council of South Africa's (GBSA's) pilot system, based on Australia's model, identified opportunities in buildings to make them more environmentally friendly, setting targets for different areas.

The GBSA would then award points for achieving these targets, providing a rating on the amount of points gained.

The pilot was expected to be introduced in July.

"It will be in the industry's long-term interest to ensure we shape the rating system through inputs across the sector," Sapoa president Ben Kodisang said in an emailed statement. "That includes architects, engineers, consultants, building contractors, as well as property owners, developers, managers, large corporate tenants, product manufacturers and distributors, and the relevant government departments."
