President Zuma to release Marikana report to the public 'in due course'
President Jacob Zuma will release the awaited Marikana Commission of Inquiry report to the public in due course, the Presidency said on Sunday.
In a statement, the Presidency said it has noted inquiries in relation to the release of the report.
“President Jacob Zuma received the report and also a subsequent briefing on the findings and recommendations from the Commission Chairperson, Judge Ian Farlam.
“The President is still processing the report and will release it publicly in due course,” the statement said.
The Commission was appointed in terms of section 84 (2) (f) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996, to investigate matters of public, national and international concern arising out of the events in Marikana which led to the deaths of approximately 44 people. The injury of more than 70 persons and the arrest of more than 250 people was also probed.
“The Commission has made some serious recommendations that require careful consideration. Therefore, it is important to apply my mind carefully so that our response ensures that the events that took place in Marikana are not allowed to happen again in our country.
“Everything is being done to ensure that the matters are concluded as soon as possible," said Zuma.
