PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Junior developer Prairie Downs Metals has launched a scoping study on its Lublin coal project, in Poland.

The study would include a revised Joint Ore Reserves Committee-compliant resource estimate, as well as mine production scenarios and scheduling, mine access, environmental and social assessment and operating and capital cost evaluations.

Prairie Downs said on Wednesday that the scoping study would likely be completed by the March quarter of next year.

“This is an opportune time to begin development of the company’s project with the focus on playing an integral part in meeting Europe’s energy needs,” said Prairie Downs CEO Ben Stoikovich.

“With the closing of further mines in Europe’s traditional hard coal basins over the coming years, and the commissioning of additional coal-fired capacity in Germany, Netherlands, Poland and Turkey, the strategic requirement for a new low-cost, stable and secure fuel supply increases.”

Prairie Downs’ Lublin project consists of four concession blocks and currently has a resource estimate of 1.57-billion tonnes of coal.
