Powertech Transformers awarded R350m miniature substation contract
Powertech Transformers, a subsidiary of Powertech and JSE-listed Altron Group, has received the majority share of a miniature substation contract from State-owned power utility Eskom.
The R350-million contract, which covers a two-year period from August 2013 to July 2015, comprises the supply of about 80 miniature substations of various sizes to Eskom for each month of the contract.
The miniature substations are intended for installation at various housing developments throughout South Africa to which Eskom supplies power.
The substations will be manufactured locally in Powertech Transformers’ Cape Town factory.
“We are delighted to be awarded this large order. Obtaining repeat business in a highly competitive domestic market from a key customer such as Eskom, confirms its confidence in us as a strategic local partner, as well as [the utility’s] commitment to its localisation programme, which benefits South Africans directly,” Powertech Transformers CEO Bernard Meyer commented.
