Power supply under threat following loss of 220 MW, Eskom warns
Energy utility Eskom has warned of a tight electricity system and possible load-shedding following the loss of 220 MW of power imports from Mozambique as a result of a technical fault on one of the eight converters at the Apollo substation, in Midrand.
Early investigations had indicated that the valve reactor had overheated during operation.
“Eskom technicians are busy with repair work, which is expected to be completed within five days. An investigation is currently under way to determine the root cause of the technical fault,” the parastatal said on Tuesday.
Noting that the occurrence had reduced available capacity to meet demand, Eskom said it, nonetheless, hoped to get through the next five days without any load-shedding.
The utility had managed to supply power without any load-shedding for just over four months, bar one occurrence in which it had to implement load-shedding for 2 hours and 20 minutes.
“The good news is that Unit 2 at Koeberg power station is due to be synchronised back into the grid today, adding 930 MW of capacity.
“The current hot temperatures also have an impact in terms of increased demand, with the use of air conditioners and reduced production at our dry-cooled power stations. We, therefore, urge all our customers to use electricity efficiently and keep air coolers at 23 °C,” it stated.
