Pneumatics technology company SMC Pneumatics launched its South African head office in Midrand on April 21, thereby enhancing its ability to service global markets. The company states that its new South African office will serve to expand the company’s future prospects of expansion into Africa.

The office boasts a total area of 4 317 m2, and is home to a fully functional, state-of-the-art showroom, as well as a warehouse for the local production of select items.

Established in Japan in 1959, SMC Pneumatics supplies pneumatic technology and industrial automation products, offering more than 12 000 basic components in over 700 000 variant forms.

Available in 84 countries, including the US, Brazil and Germany, SMC is involved in constantly researching and developing its products, and has been voted one of the world’s most innovative companies in Forbes Magazine Top 100, for three consecutive years.

SMC Pneumatics South Africa GM Adrian Buddingh spearheaded the local launch under the careful guidance of the UK team. “Our local team, made up of some of the best talent in the industry, strives to provide ultimate customer satisfaction around the country, thanks to our customised, cost-effective and quality solutions, which ensure that we raise the bar as world market leaders.”

He adds that SMC Pneumatics has invested heavily in the South African market and local production lines are equipped with the latest technology. “Our production facilities will be fully operational as of July and look to enable shorter delivery times and availability of nonstandard stock items in our range.”

Under the guidance of SMC UK production manager Peter Austin, production facilities are specified not only to international standards but also to SMC’s stringent quality standards. “Having the backing of teams from around the world, we are able to share and reapply the latest in innovation and technology here on African soil,” says Buddingh.

He says that SMC Pneumatics’ extensive network of 400 sales offices in 83 countries ensures that the company is at the forefront and also has the benefit of being exposed to more problems and solutions than its competitors.

SMC’s national training schedule, developed by national training manager Riaan van Eck, offers basic pneumatics, electropneumatics, basic hydraulics, electrohydraulics and mechatronic courses. The courses are designed to cover both theoretical and practical aspects and make use of some of the latest training equipment.

In addition, SMC Pneumatics also constantly customises its courses to offer businesses tailored solutions. “Training is critical to our success . . . our team goes on training throughout the year too,” says Van Eck.

Providing a solution for various industries, ranging from electronics and automotive to food and packaging and life sciences, SMC Pneumatics is built on three pillars, which ensures its success across a diversified market. The first pillar is product and supply: SMC Pneumatics is able to provide a wide range of low-cost and high-quality products, as well as fast delivery globally.

The second pillar is its service network, which comprises over 6 000 SMC Pneumatics sales staff worldwide, assisting with service improvements and advances in new product development.

The third pillar is technology development: SMC Pneumatics actively develops new products, while improving its pneumatic control devices.
