The City of Tshwane is looking at the possibility of turning the Wonderboom airport into a full logistics airport to assist in creating job opportunities in the city, mayor Solly Msimanga says.

“We are now doing a study in terms of what can be done to convert our airport into a full logistics airport which we believe, if we are able to do it ... will [create] massive employment opportunities,” said Msimanga.

“It will also create an opportunity to investors who want to come in and invest money in a place where they can get their goods in and out very quickly.”

Msimanga said the move would also prove beneficial for the economy of the city as that would attract investors. He said once the city goes in the direction of industrialisation the airport would act as a catalyst and cornerstone of the plans.

“Once we are saying we are going the full industrialisation route in our city, this will be something that also supports that in terms of transport. We are seeing this as an avenue that can be exploited to drive that industry as well,” he said.
