Pikitup on Friday confirmed that its controversial MD Amanda Nair had gone on “special leave” this week, but denied her absence from work had anything to do with allegations of wrongdoing levelled against her by SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu).

Although Nair has in the past been cleared by the high court of any wrongdoing, Samwu has levelled fresh allegations against her and demanded her removal from the company. This week unconfirmed reports began doing the rounds that under pressure from Samwu Pikitup had relented and removed Nair.

But on Friday Pikitup spokesperson, Jacky Mashapu, said: “Amanda is on special leave for medical reasons. She began her leave on Tuesday and would be back at work on the May 3”.

Mashapu added: “Those reporting otherwise have not even called us to confirm. Amanda is entitled as any other employee to get leave. This leave is not in any way related to the ongoing investigation against her”.

Nair was cleared of corruption charges last year after she was arrested for alleged theft of the company’s official cellphones, which were allegedly irregularly issued to her and her children.

However, matters came to a head on March 9 when at least 4 000 Pikitup workers went on an unprotected strike demanding wage hikes from R6 000 to R10 000 and the removal of Nair as MD. The strike ended at the weekend.

Samwu has since made fresh allegations against Nair and a 30-day independent inquiry was instituted to investigate the allegations.

Last week, the City of Johannesburg defended Nair, saying it would not suspend her “without following due processes”.

Matshidi Mfikoe, a member of the mayoral committee responsible for the environment and infrastructure services portfolio, said authorities would take action based on the recommendations of the independent inquiry.

Mfikoe also said under Nair’s leadership Pikitup had achieved its first clean audit in 12 years.

Meanwhile, Samwu on Thursday evening said it had agreed “in principle” with the wage offer made by Pikitup, following negotiations at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Pikitup workers went back to work on Monday following a month-long strike which came to an end on Saturday night after the City and the Samwu reached an agreement.
