Name and Location
Penonome wind power project, Panama.

Client
InterEnergy Holdings.

Project Description
The Penonome project is expected to be the largest wind power project in the Central America and Caribbean regions.

The project will be developed in four phases, under four different concessions – Rosa de los Vientos, Portobelo, Marañon and Nuevo Cagres.

The first phase involved the development of 55 MW of installed capacity.

The second and third phases of the project comprise the construction, operation and maintenance of 215 MW of installed wind power capacity.

The project will feature 86 wind turbine generators, each with a hub height of 90 m. The turbine is a three-bladed, permanent magnet direct-drive, upwind, horizontal-axis, pitch-regulated variable-speed machine.

The fourth phase will entail the development of 68 MW of installed capacity.

When completed, the project is expected to comprise 135 wind turbine generators, with a total installed capacity of 337.5 MW. The project will eliminate the emission of more than 400 000 t of carbon dioxide and save almost 900 000 bbl/y of oil.

Value
Total project investment is estimated at $427-million, which will be financed with debt and equity.

Duration
Construction of phases two and three of the project has started and is expected to be completed in April 2015. Phase 4 is planned for construction in 2015/16.

Latest Developments
Goldwind USA, the US subsidiary of Xinjiang Goldwind Science & Technology, will supply the project with 86 of its 2.5 MW permanent magnet direct-drive turbines.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
