PAST GREATNESS & PRESENT STORMS

25th April 2014

Font size: - +

There is a great deal of symbolism contained in this poignant photograph, showing storm clouds gathering above a statue of Nelson Mandela outside the gates of Drakenstein Correctional Centre (formerly Victor Verster), near Paarl, in the Western Cape. It offers a potent reminder of this country’s quite remarkable journey from apartheid to liberation and the role played by leaders such as Mandela. But it also reflects the current unsettled state of this country’s socioeconomic climate 20 years into democracy.
