Specialised global steel company SSAB has launched a new brand of steel, Strenx – a high-strength structural steel in the 600 to 1300 MPa range. Strenx performance steel combines the best properties of three brands it replaces – Optim, Weldox and Domex – from SSAB and metal-based components and systems manufacturer and supplier Ruukki, which is now a part of SSAB, says SSAB CEO Martin Lindqvist.

“Our goal is to make [our clients] more competitive as a supplier of high-end products made with advanced steels. I am confident that Strenx steel, together with SSAB’s support for innovation, design and production is a great combination for making new and improved products.”

Strenx steel provides customers with new opportunities to manufacture stronger and lighter products for segments such as lifting, transportation, marine and offshore, agriculture, trains, light rail and heavy machinery, says Lindqvist.

He says Strenx is delivered with a set of guarantees that ensure trouble-free production consistently. “The guarantees reflect the material’s extreme consistency and precision, achieved through constant improvements in the steelmaking process. The guarantees include strict tolerances for thickness, flatness and bending properties.”

Lindqvist says the introduction of Strenx steel will not require any changes in a customer’s workshop procedures.

Combining design solutions with the consistency, high-yield strength and workshop properties of Strenx allows for the manufacture of new products with improved performance. “Truck owners can cut down on fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions, while crane operators can improve their business by reaching higher and further,” says Lindqvist.

Lindqvist notes that the merger of SSAB and Ruukki gives customers access to a worldwide network of service and support resources. The new entity can assist customers with product development, innovation and the design of new applications, the choice of material, life- cycle cost calculations, logistics solutions and workshop recommendations.
