In the current competitive business environment, manufacturers need to ensure that their equipment remains effective and runs optimally at all times, says labelling, coding and print equipment supplier Pyrotec PackMark GM Brandon Pearce.

He highlights that the performance of manufacturing equipment depends on overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), which refers to factors such as the availability of the equipment, its quality versus reject rate and its performance rate.

“Each of these OEE factors relates to downtime costs, which is a major hindrance to manufacturing efficiency,” Pearce says, adding that it leads to delays in the manufacturing process and creates a domino effect that disrupts workflow.

Pyrotec PackMark provides a portfolio of coding equipment for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging requirements, he notes. The company distributes coding and labelling equipment on behalf of coding and labelling machine manufacturers such as Markem-Imaje, ALTech and Harland Machine Systems.

Pyrotec’s latest PackMark coding machines, three inkjet machines, were introduced onto the market in March.

“The average life of our coding equipment, as is the case with most products on the market, ranges from six to eight years, while the equipment’s return on investment averages about three to five years,” says Pearce.

He says the company’s customers are well catered for, with full backup and round-the-clock maintenance support. Pyrotec operates a 24-hour call centre manned by knowledgeable technicians who can resolve customer problems over the phone.

“However, towards the end of a coding machine’s life, breakdowns might become more frequent and problems are less simple to solve,” Pearce points out.

He adds that a good sign of coding machines having to be replaced is a marked increase in the cost and frequency of repairs.

Pearce says all Pyrotec PackMark equipment comes with a 12- to 18-month warranty, some with stipulated 18-month service intervals. He cautions, however, that while the service costs are stipulated at the time of purchase, additional costs could be incurred for damaged parts or poor main- tenance.

Pyrotec PackMark, which provides coding machines for the pharmaceuticals and food and beverages industries, offers several services to assist customers in buying or replacing their coding equipment, he adds.

The company also offers a rental service for coding machines. It provides a financing option in the form of a rent-to-own agreement, where customers pay a set monthly fee, depending on the rental period, which includes a maintenance contract. At the end of the rental period, customers can choose to pay an additional fee to own the machine or trade it in for a new one.

Pearce adds that trade-in options, where an old machine is traded in for a new one, are also a popular choice among customers. He says values depend on the condition and age of the equipment.

He also notes that every effort is made to ensure that coding equipment runs optimally, maintenance is fast and efficient, and downtime is minimised at all times.

“However, there eventually comes a time when all good machines need replacing and Pyrotec PackMark has the products and services to ensure that customers’ manufacturing lines continue to perform effectively.”
