Name and Location
Nyumba Ya Akiba cement project, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Client
Nyumba Ya Akiba, a 50:50 joint venture between Lucky Cement Limited (LCL), of Pakistan, and Groupe Rawji, of the DRC.

Project Description
The project involves the construction and operation of a greenfield cement manufacturing plant, a limestone quarry and associated facilities in the Bas Congo province of the DRC.

The project includes a 1.18-million-ton-a-year cement plant; an opencast limestone quarry; an overburden storage facility; an access road; a 6-km-long, 220 kV powerline to an existing substation; an accommodation camp for up to 600 employees; a waste management facility; access and haul roads; and auxiliary facilities such as water management infrastructure, a package sewage treatment plant and explosives stores.

Limestone, clay and laterite will be mined, crushed and mixed with sand in the clinker production process, which will be milled at an on-site grinding plant and supplemented with imported limestone and gypsum to produce cement. The expected life of the mine is at least 40 years.

Ground cement will be stored in two concrete silos, each with a capacity of 15 000 t.

The plant will have the capacity to bulk-load cement for commercial clients and to package and load cement in bags for sale at local retail markets.

Value
$255-million.

Duration
Construction is planned to start in the third quarter of this year and continue to the fourth quarter of 2016, when production is expected to start.
