Numsa members embark on protected strike at Rand Refinery
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Rand Refinery has confirmed to Mining Weekly Online that members of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), who represent about 35% of the total workforce, have embarked on a protected strike at the company’s Germiston-based plant.
This followed recent wage negotiations with Uasa and Numsa, during which an agreement was concluded with Uasa.
After no agreement could be reached with Numsa, the union shortly thereafter declared a dispute to the Council for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).
Following unsuccessful mediation at the CCMA last week, Numsa members embarked on strike action on August 27.
Rand Refinery said in a statement on Monday that, following “incidents of unrest”, an interdict had been granted by the Johannesburg Labour Court compelling the strikers to conduct their strike action within the applicable legal parameters and adhere to the pre-agreed picketing agreement.
“Rand Refinery plans to maintain normal production during the period of the strike,” it stated.
