Gauteng’s service delivery plans have resulted in the drop in the number of protests for the first time in 15 years, Premier David Makhura said on Wednesday.

“Gauteng is no longer the number one area of protest actions, the number of protests have dropped, thanks to our Ntirhisano community outreach programme and the war room established to further deliver better service,” Makhura told reporters in Johannesburg during a briefing on a post provincial cabinet meeting.

He said the Ntirhisano service delivery response system was based on commitment to build “an activist government” that is responsive to community needs. Through the programme, officials visit communities every two weeks to ensure problems were attended to, he said.

Makhura said his provincial government was pleased with the implementation of various plans and policies.

“Gauteng is working much better, independent sources also confirm that Gauteng is on a road to greater things,” said Makhura.

He added that the slow pace in service delivery had frustrated him in his first year in the office.

“I can tell you now that 18 months later, we are able to move faster.”

Turning to crime, Makhura said his government had appealed to national government to resolve the infighting at police management, which he said undermined the fight against crime.

“We agree that crime is out of control, and the only way to deal with this big problem is to have proper leadership in the SAPS. The infighting is undermining crime fighting initiatives … with police under fire and being killed, it doesn’t improve the situation when leaders are not focused on the job. The fight against crime is seriously undermined,” said the Guateng premier.

The provincial government was working closely with municipality to drive local economies in the townships. The province wanted township economy to form 30% of Gauteng’s GDP by 2030.

“Both spheres of government have acted by increasing the number of township enterprises, more that 500 new township enterprises have been registered with government and are receiving appropriate support,” Makhura said.

He said the aerotropolis concept was being developed in Ekurhuleni around the OR Tambo International Airport, and was billed to become Africa’s first “airport city”.

Makhura said the aerotropolis project, was being developed on back of the Gautrain – a successful transport project.

“The recent aerotropolis investment conference will catalyse our plan to build Ekurhuleni’s advanced manufacturing hub.”

An innovative and automative hub was also in the pipeline for Tshwane Metro, where an auto city would be developed in the city’s vehicle manufacturing area of Rosslyn.

“We want to turn Tshwane into an innovative and auto hub, we are investing in innovation capabilities. We announced these plans in February, and I can tell you they are at an advanced stage. We have partnered with universities in these regard to advance research and development for our economic hubs,” said Makhura.
