Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, Russia
Name and Location
Nord Stream 2 pipeline project, Russia.
Client
Nord Stream 2, which includes Gazprom (50%), BASF/Wintershall (10%), Engie (10%), Uniper (10%), OMV (10%) and Shell (10%).
Project Description
Nord Stream is the direct connection between the world’s largest gas reserves in Russia (47-trillion cubic metres) and the European Union gas transmission system.
The project will complement the existing gas transportation routes – the pipelines through Ukraine, the Yamal-Europe and Nord Stream 1 pipelines, and the pipelines planned through the Black Sea.
Nord Stream 2 natural gas pipelines will stretch for about 1 200 km, from the Ust-Luga area of the Leningrad region of Russia, across the Baltic Sea to the German coast near Greifswald, without an intermediate compressor station.
As with the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, each pipeline will have a design capacity of 27.5-billion cubic metres of gas a year.
Comprising individual pipe joints of 12 m, each line of Nord Stream 2 will require about one-hundred thousand 24 t concrete weight coated steel pipes laid on the seabed.
The pipelines will have a constant internal diameter of 1 153 mm.
Specialised vessels handling the entire welding and pipe laying process will conduct the pipe laying.
Value
The project will cost about €8-billion.
Duration
The project is expected to be commissioned at the end of 2019.
