Public Enterprises Minister Lynne Brown has urged that the best candidates be nominated to serve on the boards of State Owned Entities (SOEs).

“Help me identify your brightest and our best,” said Minister Brown as she launched an initiative to obtain the best pool of candidates from which to select board members.

A total of seven SOEs fall within the Public Enterprises portfolio.

“Since assuming office, I have said that I will review the Boards of SOEs in my portfolio. I have concluded that some Boards need strengthening and these advertisements are part of this review process,” she said on Tuesday.

In May, Minister Brown, along other Cabinet Ministers, was sworn into office following the country’s elections.

This was done to attract people with the relevant skills to serve on the boards of Eskom, SAA, Safcol and SA Express among others.

Minister Brown noted that the boards and management of SOEs must be models of strong, visionary and strategic leadership and must be exemplary of good governance.

The closing date for nominations is 17 October.

“It is also important that nominees have substantial knowledge of board governance and some of the recognised company specific aspects or sub-disciplines of the core business of the SOE they are being nominated for,” said Minister Brown.
