The NMC Construction Group  (0.02 MB)

The NMC Construction Group is underpinning a proud 34-year heritage, with an exceptional reputation as a designer and builder of industrial, commercial and infrastructure projects, through its new executive chairman, Phila Jordan whose 51 percent stake has lifted BEE ownership to 63 percent.

So says md Shaun Webber who adds that this is in line with the group's commitment to continued transformation, "The well-respected private investor in the mining and construction sectors has been at the forefront of various BBBEE transactions and in this regard gained widespread geographic exposure working with international investors. Through his investments he is currently serving as a director of several other companies.

“Mr Jordan comes with knowledge and experience in both the private and public sectors. His skill set will add a new dimension and energy to the business on all fronts. His support of the fundamental values of the NMC brand of trust, people growth, discipline and pride is encouraging, enabling us to continue to operate as a company that builds people who build relationships.

"The acquisition supports and further enhances our shareholding structure, enabling us to improve our supply chain efficiency and broaden our horizons by presenting opportunities to access new markets. New market sectors have already been identified which we believe will increase our market penetration and market share aligned to the National Development Plan. Our long-term goal is to extend our current footprint into the SADC region.

"The new capital investment and investor heralds a turning point for the business and we look forward to even more exciting developments ahead.”

Jordan comments, “NMC is now ideally positioned for a broader strategic approach to focus on public-private partnerships, engineering procurement and construction as well as design and build. Our immediate focal points are to ensure profitability and liquidity, engagement with public and private stakeholders and secure order book pipeline.

"As a multi-disciplinary construction company, the group has a national footprint with the potential to grow far larger than the existing business. This is due to our reputation, strong delivery brand and positioning as a true home-grown, people centred South African construction business," he adds.

"With our current footprint we create, on average, 26 000 jobs a year, directly and indirectly. By definition 'our people' includes our supply chain. The importance of aligning our sub-contractors, who play a pivotal role in the execution of our projects, to the group’s business principles is paramount to ensuring that we remain a sustainable and profitable business.

"NMC’s business architecture reflects our diverse capabilities to harness our collective expertise and competencies across the group to better meet the changing needs of our clients.” The business, he adds, is now ideally structured with a lean, transformed management group for profitable selection of projects and penetrating new sectors when required. Having developed the critical mass with a good and credible brand of building trust and setting the construction standard in our delivery, being ISO accredited strengthens the strategic focus of the business allowing us access to mega project clients.

The ISO accreditation affirms that the construction group’s safety, quality and environmental policies and procedures are in accordance with international standards. It has ISO 9001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO 14001 certifications.

Strategic changes to achieve  growth will include:

  • Developing the capacity to be the preferred engineering, procurement and construction; engineering, procurement and construction management; public-private partnerships contractor and partner.
  • Developing partnerships and concession opportunities with both our private and public partners.
  • Expand design and build offering.
  • Expansion into the SADC region as the opportunity arises.

"By building trust with our clients, service providers and employees, we guarantee fully integrated, quality building and civil solutions across all sectors of the economy. Sectors we operate in include but are not limited to:- retail, energy, commercial, industrial, water, institutional, hospitality, ICT, health and social welfare, transport and logistics, mining, residential, urban and regional development,” Jordan concludes.

In light of the acquisition, the group has taken a strategic decision to relocate the operational head office to Johannesburg. The Cape Town office will serve as the administrative base, with all regional offices servicing their respective geographic areas.
