Gauteng-based steel products manufacturer Nigel Metal Industries, which has been in operation for 56 years, recently acquired a computer numerically controlled (CNC) plasma cutter to extend its capabilities to precise profile cutting of up to 64 mm and the cutting of bolt-ready holes into these profiles.

Capable of working in any steel grade, Nigel Metal Industries is mainly focused on the manufacture of light- and heavy-duty steel materials handling equipment, including stackable bins, collapsible bins, tipping bins, drum lifters and trolleys. In recent times, however, the company has provided custom engineering solutions, ranging from rail repair wagons to transformer housings. It also offers magnetic particle testing on welds to ensure that they are free of cracks.

The main equipment in the company’s 6 500 m2 factory, at 14 Johnson street, in the Pretoriusstad industrial area of Nigel, includes guillotines, a CNC plasma cutter, CNC flame cutters, bending presses, band saws, drills, MIG and spot welding equipment, sandblasting equipment and a spray booth.

The 25-employee company has multiple contracts to manufacture specialised rail repair equipment, transformer housings and specialised glass-handling equipment capable of carrying glass weighing 20 t or more for extended periods. It also has running contracts with international companies like John Deere and Orthman.
