Ngqura records highest year-on-year growth
An upsurge in transshipments has pushed Transnet Port Terminals’ (TPT’s) Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) to the top in terms of year-on-year volume growth.
A recent study by the Drewry Maritime Research Company revealed that NCT’s volume growth had more than doubled at 129%.
TPT CEO Karl Socikwa said the port’s volumes were expected to remain on an upward trend, noting that a new service introduced by one of TPT’s key customers further boosted transshipment volumes.
“TPT will continue to strive for sustained world-class standards. With a R33-billion Market Demand Strategy capital injection, and our development of a strong human resources pipeline matching capacity ramp-up and operational needs, we will be the best,” he declared.
The four-year-old terminal was accommodating new-generation, 6 000-container capacity vessels and currently had a comprehensive fleet of empty container handlers, reach stackers, rubber-tyred gantries (RTGs), haulers, trailers and technologically advanced operating systems.
The port would add a further four ship-to-shore cranes and 18 RTGs to its fleet next year.
Maersk Line ranked TPT’s Port Elizabeth Container Terminal the best in Africa in terms of the most moves per shipworking hour between January and March, while the Cape Town Container Terminal received a diamond arrow award at the PMR Africa Leaders and Achievers Awards held in Newlands, Cape Town.
