Project Description
The project forms part of the Scaling Solar programme, a World Bank Group solution assisting governments in quickly procuring and developing large-scale solar projects using private financing.

The facility is expected to produce about 70 GWh/y, helping Zambia reduce power shortages and diversifying the country’s energy generation mix.

The Ngonye plant is supported by a 25-year power purchase agreement signed with Zambia’s State-owned utility Zesco.

EGP has started construction on the Ngonye solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, which is the group’s first power plant in Zambia.

In June, Enel Group signed a financing agreement of about $34-million with the Zambia IDC for the construction of the PV plant. The funding includes senior loans of up to $10-million from the International Finance Corporation, a member of World Bank Group; up to $12-million from the IFC-Canada Climate Change Program; and up to $11.75-million from the European Investment Bank.
