The next stage of upgrades to the M1 freeway and bridges in Johannesburg will start early next month, with the closure of lanes on the southbound carriageway.

At that stage, the carriageway would be reduced to two lanes between the Killarney and St Andrews offramps.

Johannesburg Roads Agency acting MD Mpho Kau on Monday said the R210-million bridge rehabilitation project was proceeding well.

The casting of the concrete footing for the new median barrier had started and all drainage within the median had been installed.

Construction work on the double-decker section and the Oxford and Federation roads bridges was continuing and traffic diversions would remain in place for the next 12 months.
