A new range of Textar auto- motive friction products that prevent the use of fraudulent parts – mainly brake pads and break shoes on light and medium commercial vehicles – was launched last month in South Africa.

“The Textar range, which is manufactured by brake friction material original-equipment manufacturer TMD Friction, is a high-quality product and, as a result, is priced slightly higher than other competitor products,” says Control Instruments Automotive (CI-A) brake division head Richard Berner.

He emphasises that brakes are a critical component of any vehicle and the flood of counterfeit parts worldwide is a serious threat to the automotive aftermarket sector.
To counter this problematic trend, Textar has invested in the development of a new security seal for all its products, incorporating advanced hologram printing technology, which is embedded with a range of complex security designs.

“The complex security designs make it nearly impossible for fraudsters to replicate,” boasts Berner.

The TMD Friction logo is represented in a three-dimensional format, standing out from the body hologram. The central discs contain a secret text, which can only be decoded using a TMD Friction lens.

Berner explains that when the lens is placed on top of the brake disc and moved up and down, the word ‘ok’ becomes visible. The body hologram is a large circle that resembles a pool of water and, when the hologram is tilted to the left, the TMD Friction logo becomes visible in a vivid black-on-green colour.

Further, the brake pad at the bottom right has microscopic text. The word ‘valid’ is visible under eight times magnification and the word ‘trustseal’ is visible under 100 times magnification.

Berner explains that, if the hologram is tilted slightly, it changes to green-on-black. When the hologram is tilted to the right, the word ‘genuine’ appears in black-on-green and then in green-on-black when turned again.

“The brake pad at the bottom left also contains the hidden wording ‘ok’, which is visible when a special laser-based verification pad device is reflected off any part of the brake friction area,” he explains.

JSE-listed Control Instruments Group, a subsidiary of CI-A, was appointed in February as the sole authorised sub-Saharan Africa distributor of the Textar range, says Berner.

More than 1 000 Textar parts are available at national fitment centre group SupaQuick’s branches and automotive spares retailer Autozone, says CI-A brake division product manager Brendon Waller.

He adds that the Textar products have a 60 000 km warranty and are supported by a website that provides a graphical representation of each product, technical specifications and the manufacturer’s cross-reference table.

“The Textar automotive friction products are suitable for use on many vehicles including Volkswagen, Audi, Toyota and Nissan vehicles,” says Berner adding

that Textar products are manufactured in line with stringent environmental requirements and that TMD has a long-term aim of reducing its energy consumption by up to 50%.
