“Legrand’s pledge to local industry is evident in a substantial investment in adapting products manufactured for the overseas market, exclusively for use in Southern Africa,” says Legrand’s national sales manager Timothy Mountjoy.
He adds that the launch of high quality plastic products has enhanced efficiency, flexibility and safety in the electrical industry, at the same time meeting specific needs in the marketplace.
“Legrand, in line with the worldwide trend, manufactures more and more goods of plastic, a material which has improved significantly in the last ten years. Advantages of high quality plastic components over traditionally metallic components are notable – especially in the electrical industry. Because plastic components are insulated against electrical shocks and do not act as electricity conductors, they are far safer. Plastic components are now UV resistant and have resistance to corrosion. They are also scratch resistant, easy to clean, lighter to carry and quicker to install than steel components,” notes Mountjoy.
Legrand’s nonscratch PVC DLP trunking system has special socket fixtures compatible with local plugs and is manufactured in grey PVC predominently for the local market. A key advantage of PVC trunking is that it is lighter than steel to carry to site and enables swift and easy installation. New from Legrand is a range of plastic cable glands, with elastic seals, that secure cable entry into enclosures.
These cable glands clip into predrilled holes and for quick and easy installation are fitted from the outside, without the need for a tool.
The cable is then inserted through the pliable closed end of the gland. The soft sheath forms an automatic perfect seal around the cable that is secured by spring-loaded locking jaws, to 15-kg tension.
These glands, which accommodate cables of between 3 mm and 24 mm, have an IP 65 index protection rating as a guaranteed shield against dust and water. The company has made a substantial investment in adapting the mosaic range of switches and sockets to accommodate many different functions for local applications.
Modern polycarbonate cover plates, which are smooth and screwless, are easy to clean and install.
Plastic-based components from Legrand provide an efficient solution to many electrical control requirements and the company’s products carry the South African Bureau of Standards mark.
