The newly established Transnet Centre for Business Management of Projects (TCBMP) at the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB), in the Western Cape, will improve the training of project managers in the country, says management development company USB Executive Development (USB-ED) CEO Frik Landman.

USB-ED is the public management development and training company affiliated to USB, and Landman tells Engineering News that State-owned freight logistics group Transnet has entered into a sponsorship agreement with USB-ED, announced in April at the USB campus in Bellville, Cape Town, which will result in Transnet contributing R2-million a year over three years towards maintaining and running TCBMP.

He says the partnership necessitated the name change from the previous Centre for Business Management Projects to reflect the Transnet association.

Landman adds that USB-ED is a learning partner that takes note of the bigger development picture. He maintains that being part of USB-ED enables students to be part of a growing network of leaders across Africa who aspire to reach new heights in their career development and who aim to contribute meaningfully by leading and serving the greater African community.

USB-ED plans to have a presence in 12 to 16 African countries by the end of the year. “With the help of partnerships, we want to establish an advanced network of learning throughout Africa,” he says.

Landman explains that project management, particularly the business management/project management interface during the front-end of projects, forms part of the aim to establish USB-ED specialist areas on the continent. “We want to make a difference in Africa, upgrade infrastructure and, ultimately, help grow the African economy”.

Transnet group executive of human resources Nonkululeko Sishi said at the launch of TCBMP that “In addressing the issue of skills development, Transnet is partnering with various institutions of higher learning, and we are delighted that USB-ED has become one of our partners to help find a solution to the skills shortage in Transnet and the country.”

She added that a memorandum of understanding and a sponsorship agreement defined two important elements of the partnership ¬– establishing the TCBMP and creating a pool of project management skills and knowledge directed at the specific needs of the greater Transnet business environment.

“As Transnet, we are entering our third year of executing our Market Demand Strategy. We have invested millions in our employees – spending about R2.5-billion on training during the past three years,” she added.

Sishi stated that, in the future, critical and priority skills areas, including business and project management, would be a key focus of development.
