New Mulilo CEO says South Africa’s renewables, storage markets poised for exponential growth
Independent power producer Mulilo reports that Jan Fourie has officially assumed the role of CEO, where he will oversee the company’s growth ambitions in South Africa’s public-procurement and private-offtake markets for both renewable energy and battery storage.
Fourie, who is an electrical engineer with a master’s in business administration, has 17 years of experience in the African power sector, most recently as a senior executive as Scatec.
He took over the position at Mulilo from Johnny Cullum, who cofounded the company with Chris Aberdein in 2008 and who remains on the board.
Mulilo chairperson Jan Oberholzer expressed delight at Fourie’s appointment and indicated that, as CEO, he would oversee all aspects of the company’s operations, including project development, strategic partnerships and stakeholder engagement.
The company currently has more than 420 MW of operational solar photovoltaic (PV) and onshore wind, a further 1 263 MW of solar PV, onshore wind, and battery energy storage system projects under financial close, and a development pipeline comprising over 30 GW.
Oberholzer previously told Engineering News that the company was gearing up to grow its renewables and battery storage portfolio by about 5 GW over the coming five years.
Fourie said South Africa’s renewables and storage markets were poised for an exponential expansion over the coming 10 years and described Mulilo as well-positioned to spearhead the roll-out of clean, reliable energy solutions to communities across South Africa.
