NEW FRAMEWORK

9th February 2018

Straight-shooting businessperson Jabu Mabuza intends bringing a back-to-basics ethos to Eskom that he arguably learned while operating in South Africa’s hypercompetitive taxi market. Speaking at the embattled group’s delayed interim results presentation last week, Mabuza suggested that he had already come across some quite abnormal practices at the utility, which he hoped to address during his tenure as chairperson. This approach will be guided by a new framework, which will define the relationship between the Eskom board and the Department of Public Enterprises. The framework sets out roles, responsibilities and clear deliverables for the board and the shareholder and, crucially, spells out where the duties of the board start and where the duties of the Ministry and the department end.
