Mining powerhouse Anglo Platinum has selected industry automator Siemens' SIMATIC PCS7, as the control system of choice for its largest concentrator of 600 kt/m built at Potgietersrust Platinum (PPRust).
A partnership between Siemens Automation and Drives and automation solutions company System Automation and Management (SAM) proved to be the right combination for Angloplats. Building on a proven track record of almost 20 years in providing turnkey solutions to the mining, power generation, automotive, cement, water and food and beverage industries, SAM implemented the SIMATIC PCS7, a control system considered to be reliable, upgradeable and of high quality, comments the company.
PPRust is Angloplat's only opencast platinum mine, about 300km north of Johannesburg.
The PPRust plant consists of 9 autonomous system stations linked with Scalance switches to the two redundant server pairs. The 4300 + input/output (I/O) is mounted in 123 remote I/O boxes which make use of ET200M remote stations linked by fibre cable. All of the 726 motors are linked through Profibus and all data output links have Simocode ProV to provide diagnostic information as well as control. Nearly 40 km of fibre has been installed and 2,2 km of copper profibus cable.
The control system was upgraded from V6.2 to the as then unreleased V7.0 during the engineering phase of the project, making the system the first V7.0 system implemented in South Africa.
As far as quality is concerned, SAM has invested about four years in the implementation and development of its quality management system, which is in accordance with the ISO 9000-2000 standard. To achieve this, a system must be in place to enable continual measurement and assessment, ensuring consistent improvement of business practices or processes.
The quality management system at SAM is designed with a number of process checks to ensure that the customer's requirements are continually delivered on time, to specification and within budget, thereby ensuring customer satisfaction without compromising quality.
