As part of its ongoing portfolio review, Nestlé South Africa has decided to sell its ice-cream business to UK-based ice-cream manufacturer R&R, but was strongly committed to doing business in South Africa.

“The sale of an asset of this nature is not a decision that is taken lightly. However, as does any business, we continuously seek opportunities to improve our operations, review our portfolio and protect the livelihoods of our employees wherever we can,” said Nestlé South Africa chairperson and MD Ian Donald in a statement on Thursday.

The company advised that the divestment included local ice-cream brands and its ice-cream manufacturing facility in Clayville, in Gauteng. About 200 employees would be transferred to R&R.

Donald highlighted that, after being present in the South African market for nearly 100 years, Nestlé currently employed 3 100 employees across eight factories, three distribution centres and its head office.

Nestlé South Africa was confident that the decision was in the best interests of the business, its employees and other key stakeholders, including its customers, distributors and consumers.

The agreement was subject to the approval of the South African competition authorities.
