Company Announcement - The South African Nuclear Energy Corporation, Necsa, welcomes the Government’s current work aimed at expediting the nuclear new build programme. The signing of Intergovernmental Agreements with various vendor countries marks an important step towards implementation of the decisions on an energy mix that includes new nuclear power generation, and which will ensure energy security for our country.
“The nuclear power expansion, in accordance with the IRP 2010 – 2030, seeks to deliver a modern nuclear generation fleet which will ensure a low-cost and low-carbon base load electricity supply for decades to come”, said the Ambassador Mochubela Seekoe, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Necsa. Ambassador Seekoe reiterated that the programme would develop skills, create sustainable jobs and contribute to dynamic economic growth in South Africa.
Ambassador Seekoe also commended the Minister of Energy, Ms Tina Joemat Pettersson for her leadership role in the process. “Minister Joemat Pettersson has shown great leadership and provides valuable guidance for the nuclear build programme”, said the Ambassador.
Necsa is ready to play its role in the new build programme including by supporting localisation, manufacturing of components and skills development. Apart from its main operations at Pelindaba, Necsa also operates the Vaalputs radioactive waste management facility. Necsa was recently awarded the ASME N Stamp, which will allow the company not only to manufacture nuclear components but also to undertake nuclear design.
