Namibia’s power utility NamPower has kicked of the prequalification process for the provision of a turnkey engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) solution for the 800 MW Kudu gas-to-power project that it was currently developing, near Oranjemund, in Namibia, by inviting qualified companies to tender in this regard.

Interested parties would also have to complete a qualification questionnaire to be included in NamPower’s shortlist of prequalified bidders.

NamPower stated that enquiry documents would be issued to prequalified bidders in the second quarter of this year and the EPC turnkey contractor selected by the fourth quarter.

The combined-cycle Kudu gas-to-power station will use natural gas from the Kudu gasfield, located 170 km offshore, and will be connected to the Namibian and South African power grids. The utility expected the power station to be commissioned by 2017/18.

NamPower will purchase power from the plant under long-term power purchase agreements for local and regional use. The utility signed a project development agreement with the Kudu Gas Field Upstream Developers on March 1, facilitating timelines to achieve financial close within the next 12 months.

The utility had appointed Ernst & Young, Strategic International Advisory, DLA Piper and ESB International as its transaction advisors.

Interested parties had until May 3 to submit their bids.
