Name and Location
Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba railway line project, Kenya.

Client
Kenya Railways.

Project Description
The project includes four projects: the construction of the Naivasha–Kisumu standard gauge railway and the Kisumu–Malaba standard gauge railway, as well as the construction of the Kisumu port and the extension of the inland container depot (ICD) in Nairobi.

The Naivasha–Kisumu standard gauge railway and the Kisumu–Malaba standard gauge railway are the second section and third section respectively of the Naivasha–Kisumu–Malaba railway.

The Kisumu port will open up the outward channel through which Lake Victoria links to the Indian Ocean, extend the radiating range of the standard gauge railways and increase regional passenger and freight volume.

The ICD, on completion, will meet the requirements of railway operation for the function of an inland port, container distribution, transit and warehousing, among other services.

Value
The contract is valued at an estimated $5.42-billion.

Duration
The Naivasha–Kisumu standard gauge railway and the Kisumu–Malaba standard gauge railway will take 54 months to complete.

The Kisumu port will take about 36 months to complete and the ICD 24 months.

Latest Developments
Kenya signed an agreement with the China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) for the construction of the project in March.

All projects will be completed under an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract.

The contract will enable the two companies to collaborate on the completion of a feasibility study for the project and facilitate technology transfer, as well as create skills and capacity for construction, maintenance and operation of the railway on completion.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
CCCC (EPC).

On Budget and on Time?
