To gain new entry-level data users, telecommunications services provider MTN has reduced its data prices and now also offered a 10 MB data bundle for R10 that could be used with any contract, said MTN South Africa chief marketing officer Serame Taukobong on Thursday.

The company also planned to continue improving its third generation (3G) coverage by upgrading its towers to bring better data services to all customers, including those in rural areas.

Further, it was also trying to move more middle- and high-end users to its long-term evolution network to free up space on its 3G network, he noted.

“We are investing in 3G and are introducing many new devices to offer customers more choices to access and use data on our network. We are also looking at content-generation opportunities to provide content for low-end users and rich content services for high-end users. The service layer is important to us.”

The new ranges of devices and offerings were aimed at bringing more people to the Internet, which would help MTN retain existing customers, as well as gain new customers, and move them progressively to higher quality networks and services, Taukobong explained.

Meanwhile, MTN said it would be proactive and participate in the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa’s (Icasa’s) mobile termination rate (MTR) review process, but called for certainty in this regard.

Icasa was considering whether or not the MTR should be further reduced to between 15c and 20c.

The MTR was reduced to 40c a minute on March 1, as stipulated by Icasa’s 2010 Wholesale Voice Call Termination Regulations.

The initial termination rate of R1.25 a minute in 2009 had been systemically reduced over the years, dropping to 89c and 73c in 2010 and 2011 respectively, and finally reaching 56c last year.
