Tau Morwe will take early retirement and step down as Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) CEO at the end of April.

Morwe, who joined Transnet in 1997, has served as CE at three of the group’s divisions – TNPA, Transnet Freight Rail and as the first CE of Transnet Port Terminals (TPT). He is one of the longest serving and most experienced executive committee members at Transnet.

“Throughout his tenure at Transnet, Tau has been an exemplar of the kind of values to which we aspire. He has been a driven and ambitious leader, who has been at the forefront of a number of momentous changes that we have witnessed at Transnet.

“There are not many people who can say they have been responsible for the ports infrastructure of a nation’s entire coastline, but Tau is proudly one of the few,” Transnet commented in a statement on Wednesday.

It added that Morwe was passionately involved in all maritime matters and that he had led the Port Management Association of Eastern and Southern Africa (PMAESA) from 2011 to 2014.

“He strengthened relations among member ports and promoted regional cooperation and integration. Here too, his service was invaluable to our country, ensuring that South Africa continues to play its role in growing regional economies.

“On behalf of the board and all of our colleagues, we salute the quiet dignity and wisdom he has led with over the years. Tau means ‘lion’ in SeTswana and SeSotho and Tau has aptly lived up to his name,” stated Transnet.
