Mombasa-Kampala railway refurbishment project, Kenya and Uganda.

Client
Rift Valley Railways (RVR), comprising Citadel Capital, through its subsidiary Ambiance Ventures (51%), TransCentury, through 100% owned subsidiary Safari Rail (34%) and Bomi Holdings (15%).

Project Description
The project aims to refurbish the railway system between Mombasa, in Kenya, and Kampala, in Uganda. The current railway system is working at 10% of its eight-million-ton to ten-million-ton capacity.

The aim is to have the rail system operating at 40% of its capacity, at four-million tons a year, instead of the current 10%.

This will include the refurbishment of locomotives, while the 1 331 km railway line will also receive 70 km of new track.

Value
The project is valued at $287-million.

Duration
The project is a three-year investment.

Latest Developments
RVR has already spent $45-million on refurbishing the rail system.
