Molewa dismisses CoAL environmental authorisation amendment appeal
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa has dismissed an appeal against the environmental authorisation (EA) amendment for Coal of Africa Limited’s (CoAL’s) Makhado project, in Limpopo.
The amendment, which was granted in July in terms of the National Environmental Management Act, amended the holder of the authorisation from CoAL to Baobab Mining and Exploration, the legal entity for the Makhado project.
It also amended the validity period of the EA for an additional five years.
Environmental group Vhembe Mineral Resources Stakeholders' Forum, in August, lodged an appeal against the EA amendment.
"CoAL continues to engage with the Department of Water and Sanitation to progress the appeal against the integrated water-use licence for the Makhado project,” CoAL CEO David Brown said on Wednesday.
