Prefabricated structure manufacturer Kwikspace Modular Buildings has, on an ongoing basis, supplied over 8 000 m2 of mobile and modular units, as well as numerous rental units to State-owned power utility Eskom’s Medupi project, near Lephalale, in Limpopo.
As a significant manufacturer of factory- built accommodation, the company has had a continuous relationship with Eskom stretching back to the early 1980s. It has supplied countless residential homes, offices and site accommodation to Eskom for its Mpumalanga power station sites, including Tutuka, Kriel and Matla.
Kwikspace was first awarded the Medupi contract in 2009. Besides the mobile units, the company was also contracted to erect modular units on site. It has, to date, erected about 6 700 m2 of these residential and office units on site.
Some buildings erected did not conform to normal specifications and had to be built to the client’s requirements.
“We were chosen for this project owing to our quality control systems and the fact that our products suited the client’s requirements with regard to specification and the speed at which the project needed to be completed.”
The project required high-quality products and the increasing manpower on site demanded the need for almost instantaneous office accommodation.
Further, the manufacturer’s buildings are cost-effective when compared with traditional buildings and can be altered and relocated with ease.
The project was carried out according to Medupi’s stringent health and safety requirements.
“Safety files, risk assessments, medicals and inductions had to be done before delivery and work on site could start, while on-site safety included aspects like mini risk assessments before any work was done, as well as tool tagging and monitoring,” says Kwikspace.
