Risk management is usually the responsibility of risk managers/professionals in separate business units working with differing risk management systems. This contributes to multiple risk mitigation strategies resulting in a lack of risk information sharing and a lack of understanding of the key risks facing the organisation. Although business units may function in isolation, risks certainly do not. Without an integrated approach to risk management, an organisation will never achieve optimum results.

The MIRACLES software can be applied in a vast array of organisations from small businesses to large mining groups. The system has a proven track record in both developing and developed markets with various successful implementations, both locally and internationally. It is compatible with industry standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 as well as company ERP, HR, Financial, CRM and other software applications. MIRACLES helps companies monitor the value and significance of being hands-on and innovative in their approach to risk management.

The MIRACLES Risk Profile covers seven disciplines: Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, Liability, Security and HACCP. Sets of hazards, risks and consequences are pre-loaded on the program ensuring comprehensive and precise risk assessments. Risk disciplines are automatically populated, guaranteeing accurate risk ratings. Risk control templates can be set up and linked to risk assessments so that controls are put in place for all identified risks, minimising the chance of incidents.

The system provides functionality for risk activities to be revised; frequencies are set up as per user requirements and notifications are sent out as reminders.

The new Generic Risk Methodology allows for the easy creation of a structured and simplified generic risk assessment, by using an intuitive wizard style interface which guides the user throughout the process. It consists of a five step HSE approach.

The new Generic Risk Methodology allows the user to:
• Identify Hazards / Risks / Consequences and consider the likelihood of the hazard occurring
• Customise and use their own Risk rating matrix and Risk ranking methodology
• Manage and monitor adequate controls by assigning responsibilities and targets for completion. The responsibilities will be notified/reminded of their involvement through email notifications.

The new Generic Risk Methodology includes a custom matrix builder which allows the user to configure his/her own scoring matrixes. This makes the methodology very flexible since the values can be configured by the user during the configuration process. The control categories and levels are also configured and can be scored manually, this adds to both the flexibility and usability.

The Generic Risk Methodology allows for added benefits compared to the current MIRACLES methodology:
• Users are able to add multiple tasks to a single Activity
• Multiple affected job types or people can be linked to different tasks
• Users can configure the raw risk rating from a “2 dimensional” to a “3 dimensional” rating
• The risk matrix and the standard risk dimension descriptions can be customised to the organizations risk methodology
• Select between the use of “Raw risk supporting information” and or “Controlled risk supporting information” only
• Users can add their own “Hierarchy of controls”; “Control types” and “Control activities”
• Control activities are rated manually or by the use of a risk matrix
• Responsibilities; monitor items; additional documentation and recommendations can be linked to a specific control activity

NOSA has approached the release as a phased approach whereby this is phase 1, using this period as a User Acceptance Testing period. Phase 2 will commence in the New Year, where industry inputs and feedback will have been taken into consideration.
