Measuring climate change

18th September 2019

The rising temperatures of air and water, an increase in flash floods and hurricanes globally, the loss of sea ice and the melting ice cap in Greenland all point to climate change and its impact on the environment and on weather conditions.

Accurate environmental measurement instrumentation allow statistics to be generated in order to establish the variants in climate and weather patterns.

A range of meteorological instruments and systems are developed and manufactured by Delta OHM. The systems are recognised by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and carry calibration certificates from the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation Mutual Recognition Arrangement, valid worldwide.

The products are distributed by GHM Messtechnik in South Africa, and include the following:

Data Loggers

These devices offer the flexibility to analyse data how and where it is required, using local database connections and cloud solutions with information available on a tablet, computer or smart phone. In addition, they have a back-up in the event of a power failure.

Temperature, Pressure, Humidity Measurement

Humidity and temperature are considered to be basic measurements but the company states that its instrumentation design is updated with more advanced features, to increase the instrumentations’ reliability and functionality.

Products include:

  • Dual temperature and relative humidity transmitters
  • Meteorological shield for temperature and humidity measurement
  • Probes for soil temperature profile measurements
  • Barometric transmitters
  • High-accuracy barometric transmitters
  • Digital barometric transmitters with LED indication
  • Leaf wetness sensor with double sensitive surface
  • Two-and three-electrode probes for soil volumetric water content

Wind Measurement

Monitoring, measuring, collecting and analysing data related to wind power is seen as an important tool for monitoring phenomena such as hurricanes and the related damage to the environment, property and people. Wind measurement is also seen as important in the sphere of renewable power generation.

The wind measurement instruments are manufactured with smart and corrosion-resistant materials and have an internal compass. They are designed to operate on solar power and give readings for direction, speed, gusts and record averages. Heated versions can also be supplied.

Solar Measurement

The pyrometers are manufactured in accordance with ISO 9060 classification and WMO recommendations and include:

  • Secondary standard pyranometer
  • First class pyranometer
  • Second class pyranometer
  • LP silicon pyranometer
  • Photometric probe
  • Radiometric probe
  • Radiometric probe for environmental use
  • Radiometric UV index
  • Sunshine duration sensor
  • Pyrheliometer
  • Pyrgeometer
  • Net radiance meter
  • Net irradiance meter

The solar measurement instruments include a levelling device for positioning and optical glass and standard quartz diffusers and calibration certificates are included. The instruments can be connected to any system and have an internal desiccant cartridge, to facilitate maintenance.

Precipitation Measurement

Rain gauges are used as part of cloud-based warning systems that identify heavy rainfalls and provide flooding risk alerts.

The rain gauges are also calibration certified and designed with corrosion-resistant materials. No power supply is required and optional heating versions and pole-mounted gauges are also available.

The following gauge variations are available for forecasting:

  • 200 cm2  tipping bucket
  • 400 cm2 tipping bucket
  • 400 cm2  weighing rain gauge and rain detector

These early warning system solutions are customisable in all geology, hydrology, flooding and landslide applications.
