Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu says outstanding matters regarding an investigation into the R3-billion Nandoni dam water project by the Special Investigation Unit should not be the cause for the delay of the project.

The Minister was speaking during a return visit to Giyani township, in Limpopo, to address water challenges in the area.

The follow-up visit was to check progress last month in a probe for accountability of the R3-billion of that was used to build the Nandoni water project which commenced six years ago .

The Minister was briefed on measures taken since the earlier working visit to continue work on the Giyani Bulk Water Supply Scheme towards completion. This water scheme will provide fresh water to villages in Giyani within the Mopani district of Limpopo.

Mchunu noted that the Nondomi dam in Giyani has been failing to provide water for the 55 villages expecting services. He highlighted that more R30billion had been spent on water services on this dam with targets still not met

“We want to ensure that the pipe from Nandoni down to Giyani gets completed, once and for all, and as soon as possible. An assessment of how much work has been done on the project and how much more still needs to be done will be followed by timelines and budgets being set out," said the Minister.
