May steel production volumes 5.1% lower y/y – worldsteel

World crude steel production for the 63 countries reporting to the World Steel Association (worldsteel) was 161.6-million tonnes in May, which is 5.1% lower than that produced in May 2022.

Africa produced 1.3-million tonnes in May – an 18.6% year-on-year increase.

Asia and Oceania produced 119.5-million tonnes, which is down 6%. The European Union produced 11.6-million tonnes, which is down 11.2%.

Other countries in Europe produced 3.7-million tonnes, which is 7.7% lower year-on-year. The Middle East produced 4.4-million tonnes, which is 4.3% higher.

North America produced 9.6-million tonnes, a 3.7% year-on-year decrease.

Russia, other Commonwealth of Independent States countries and Ukraine produced 7.9-million tonnes, which is up 11.5% year-on-year.

South America produced 3.6-million tonnes, which is 5.2% lower than in May 2022.

Further, China produced 90.1-million tonnes in May, which is down 7.3% on May 2022. India produced 11.2-million tonnes, which is 4.1% higher. Japan produced 7.6-million tonnes, which is down 5.2%.
