India-based Mahindra & Mahindra on Wednesday announced the appointment of Sanjoy Gupta as successor to outgoing Mahindra South Africa CEO Ashok Thakur.

Thakur was selected to lead Mahindra's newly established dedicated African Business Unit, which would act as the centre of the company's business expansion into Africa.

Gupta was relinquishing his role as Mahindra & Mahindra India VP for national spares and service strategy, technical support, sales and service, and customer satisfaction to head up the South African operations.

“Back in 2004, when we started Mahindra South Africa, we already knew that the country would be the beachhead for Mahindra's growth in Africa," Thakur said.

“Against the backdrop of Mahindra's closer focus on Africa and the key role Mahindra South Africa is set to play in that strategy, the local company is entering a new and exciting phase, with more initiatives on all fronts,” he added.

The company planned to introduce several new models in the short  to medium term, while expanding the Mahindra dealer network.
