Name of the Project
M2 Kaserne and Selby bridges repair and rehabilitation project.

Location
Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

Project Description
The JRA has, after continuous monitoring of parts of the support structure of the Kaserne and Selby bridges on the M2 highway, concluded that the structural integrity of the concrete elements of the bridges has been severely reduced over the years.

Parts of the support structure have moved vertically and horizontally, affecting the structural stability of the bridges. As a result, the JRA decided in August to close a 200 m section of the Kaserne bridge.

Traffic from the eastbound lanes will be diverted onto the westbound land to allow for traffic to flow in both directions.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
Repairs and rehabilitation of the bridges started in the second week of October in 2018 and will take about 12 months to complete.

Latest Developments
The M2 bridge rehabilitation project is about 60% complete and on track for handover on October 31.

The contractor – Stefanutti Stocks – is working on the reconstruction of four columns across Sauer street. The columns are the only four that need to be demolished owing to defective structures, with the previous outside column’s foundation being faulty as well.

The construction of the 4-m-wide by 18-m-tall columns will take about a month to complete.

The joints and decks of the entire bridge also need to be waterproofed, as a significant portion of the damage caused to the M2 is water related.

With the decks, all that is required is the removal of 30 mm from the 100 mm surface and the resurfacing thereof with a waterproof asphalt.

The bridge repair programme is expected to continue for at least three financial years; however, these aspects will not require further road closures, except for perhaps one or two lanes at a time.

Key Contracts and Suppliers
Stefanutti Stocks (contractor).
