Following the success of seminars on storage tank and associated facilities in 2010 and 2012, fire hazards and fire-protection technology provider dosetechfire, formerly trading as DoseTech, will host renowned expert on fuel storage fire hazard prevention Dr Nial Ramsden in April 2014, in Cape Town.

dosetechfire MD Mike Feldon tells Engineering News that the company also provides product application training and full documentation for all the products and systems it supplies, including its foam concentrate admixing dosing systems.

He explains that US manufacturer of firefighting equipment and emergency response products Akron Brass has been supplying its products to the Southern African market for more than 30 years.

However, Feldon says there was poor local marketing of the Akron Brass range, which resulted in market appreciation of the range declining and Akron Brass’s market share falling significantly.

“In June 2010, dosetechfire acquired the sole distribution rights for Akron Brass’s products and relaunched the brand onto the Southern African fire protection market,” he states.

Feldon highlights that the product relaunch has achieved outstanding success, mainly owing to the fire protection industries’ recognition of the qualities of the Akron Brass brand, which he says “offers outstanding quality and reliability”.

He adds that numerous local projects are using the Akron Brass units and systems.

Feldon notes that dosetechfire introduced the 3580 Renegade electric monitor severe-duty model for continuous fire monitoring operations in August to the local market.  The 3580 Renegade provides a water throw of 108 m at 15 000 l/m.

Moreover, he notes that there is a wide user awareness of the product throughout the local fire protection industry because of its extensive application over the past 30 years. The relaunch of the product range has been successful in the Southern African oil and petrochemical industries, fuel pipelines and industry in general.

The Akron Brass 98 hand-line fire-hose nozzles, including the SaberJet, offer solid bore and/or fog patterns in a single unit, with excellent stream performance at pressures as low as 3 bar, says Feldon.

“The range has created new markets for the product, particularly for dust suppression in the mining industry and for heavy-duty vehicle-wash applications,” he highlights, adding that the Akron Brass units have a standard ten-year warranty. The units contain about 50 monitor models, which include portable-, manual-, electric- and hydraulic-type systems.

The Akron Brass products are also extensively used in countries including Zambia, Kenya, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Mozambique.

Overcoming Challenges

“The reintroduction of a product line that had fallen out of favour is a challenge and we have applied an aggressive sales approach by offering incentives, such as free service for all old hand-line nozzles, which has been well received,” states Feldon.

However, as the product is well respected, dosetechfire does not have to sell its qualities or pedigree. “Cost of ownership is directly related to the quality of the product and the user’s perception of what the product is required to do. Akron products are of a high quality, with guaranteed performance and reliability and, as such, are economically priced, compared with items of a similar standard,” states Feldon.

Akron Brass products are manufactured in Ohio, in the US, to stringent International Organisation for Standardisation and other international standards. Most of the system’s components are also manufactured in the US.

“Firefighters worldwide have come to rely on the quality and application design of Akron Brass’s products. Comprehensive support from the factory enables dosetechfire to assist with the service and customer support required to satisfy the needs of fire protection equipment users,” Feldon concludes.
