Local primary liquid filtration products designer and manufacturer Flow Clear Filtration has established a niche segment within the industrial filtration market through three distinctly South African products.

The self-cleaning strainers, high-capacity bag filters and centrifugal filters are 100% designed and manufactured in-country to meet the specific application requirements of South African customers instead of forcing them to accept the standard directory of imported equivalent products, says Flow Clear Filtration owner and CEO George Canning.

“Our PS range of self-cleaning strainers is steadily gaining popularity and has no identical local or imported equivalent. They are completely South African and, as such, are designed for African conditions, meaning that they are robust with a simple design and sturdy construction,” he tells Engineering News.

Flow Clear Filtration products can be used in various applications across several industries, including the water treatment, mining, power generation and manufacturing industries.

Canning adds that the self-cleaning feature of the strainers– which entails using a rotating brush that mechanically scrubs the wedge wire filtration screen while the unit is purging – coupled with strong local support and a customisable layout, have been received well within the market.

The self-cleaning strainers are usually made using 304L stainless steel, although materials such as carbon steel are available and range from 32 mm to 250 mm in port sizes. The strainers have a filtration capability varying from 50 µm to 700 µm or more if required by customers.

Canning explains that, while the purging can be completed manually, it is normally a fully automatic process using a motor – and gearbox-driven rotating brush and either an electric or electropneumatic purge valve. The intervals between purge cycles are governed by simple site-adjustable analogue timers that do not require any computer programming.

Further, the strainers are fitted with a differential pressure switch to override the timers and initiate a purge cycle if there is a sudden rise in differential pressure between timed cycles.

Meanwhile, Canning also notes that the company’s BIB range of high-capacity liquid bag filters share the same attributes as all the other Flow Clear Filtration products and have an uncomplicated design.

“These high-capacity liquid bag filters are our own design and feature a customisable layout. The standard #2 filter bag has a maximum flow capacity of 25 m3/h to 30 m3/h water flow, while our BIB design filter bag that fits into the same physical size housing as a conventional bag has a water flow capacity of up to 70 m3/h,” he adds.

Canning further notes that the company manufactures the housings in 304L stainless steel with 50 mm, 80 mm, 100 mm and 150 mm port sizes with quick- release covers offering easy access to the filter bag.

Meanwhile, he highlights the company’s Dirt Gobbla range of centrifugal filters, which was designed as an alternative to expensive equivalents. “Our filters have proven to be successful in a number of applications and, like all centrifugal filters, correct selection and sizing are critical for a successful installation,” he concludes.
