Project Description
The project involves the modernisation of 68 metro cars in service on the Shanghai metro line 5. It also entails the supply of traction and train control management systems for 198 new metro cars expected to circulate on the existing line and its extension, which is expected to open by the end of 2017.

Metro line 5, which was opened in 2003, is 17.2 km long and includes 11 stations. The extension will add 16.6 km and nine stations. The modernisation project will increase the reliability of the cars and adapt them to a new signaling system that will be implemented on the line.

The contract for the modernisation project is valued at €46-million.

Alstom and its Chinese joint venture Shanghai Alstom Transport Co (Satco) have been awarded the contract to modernise the 68 metro cars.

Alstom will supply traction systems for 198 new metro cars supplied by Satco that have been ordered for the line.
