Tshepong Primary School in Gauteng is the latest South African school to be completely built from prefabricated building technology by Kwikspace.
Contracted by the Gauteng Department of Education to supply a turnkey facility for approximately 1 000 primary school learners, Kwikspace together with its local sub-contractors erected the school – a site of over 60 buildings – in less than six months using its KWIKPLAST alternative building technology.
This panel technology features an 80-mm polyurethane core clad in a high-tensile reinforcing mesh that is then plastered on site, giving the buildings a high-quality, permanent feel.
“This alternative building technology is Agrément-certified, with outstanding fire and thermal ratings,” explains Roberto Campos, National Sales Executive, Kwikspace. “It is ideal for rapidly meeting any permanent accommodation requirement with a hard plaster finish.”
Approximately 30 classrooms, several ablution facilities, staff offices, IT rooms, multi-purpose centres, a laboratory, a library as well as numerous other structures were erected using KWIKPLAST panels. The complete quantity of panels required for Tshepong were manufactured in two weeks.
With its focus on employing local contractors in executing the site work, Kwikspace ensured that all on-site workers were appropriately trained and equipped in line with Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) requirements.
The handover of Tshepong Primary School to the Gauteng Department of Education marks the latest addition to a successful history of projects between the department and the modular buildings supplier, with hundreds of prefabricated buildings having been supplied to various schools in the province over a number of years. Over 150 000 learners in South Africa are taught in classrooms supplied by Kwikspace.
