Tanzanian-listed Tanga Cement Company Limited (TCCL) has started the $165-million construction of a second kiln for its Tanga plant, which is expected to be commissioned in the third quarter of 2015.

TCCL is partly owned by major South African cement producer AfriSam, which has a 62.5% shareholding in Tanga Cement and which plays an important role in AfriSam’s African growth strategy.

“The construction of the kiln is in response to the consistently high demand for cement from the Tanzanian and surrounding markets. Until now, Tanga Cement has had to import clinker to meet this demand and the new kiln will enable the company to produce enough clinker to meet all its requirements and reduce imports significantly,” says AfriSam CEO Stephan Olivier.

The kiln will increase Tanga Cement’s clinker capacity of 500 000 t/y by 600 000 t/y, more than doubling its current capacity.

According to Olivier, the project is in its initial ground stage and the contractor has begun the geotechnical investigation for construction, which was approved in May.

AfriSam constructed its first-ever kiln for Tanga Cement in 1985 and this is only the second kiln construction that AfriSam is undertaking, making it a milestone for the company.

AfriSam’s technical services department will provide support during the construction of the kiln.

Meanwhile, Tanga Cement increased its cement production capacity from 750 000 t/y to more than 1.2-million tons a year by commissioning a second cement mill two years ago.

With the construction of the new kiln, AfriSam is hoping to increase its overall presence in Africa, as the company is investigating opportunities for the expansion of its business operations on the continent.

Olivier points out that infrastructure improvements and housing needs in the East African market have stimulated rapid economic growth and created a chain reaction of project opportunities for AfriSam.

“The company has a significant competitive advantage by being the first to add clinker capacity to this market. The construction of the second kiln will not only benefit Tanga Cement and AfriSam but will also contribute to the economic development of Tanzania and the East African region,” he states.
