Karoshoek concentrated solar power project, South Africa
Name and Location
Karoshoek concentrated solar power (CSP) project, Northern Cape, South Africa.
Client
FG Emvelo, a joint venture between German consortium FG.de and Emvelo, and ABB.
Project Description
FG Emvelo has been awarded preferred bidder status under the third round of the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme for its 100 MW CSP project.
The Karoshoek CSP project will be built on 340 km2 of land in the Karoshoek Solar Valley, located in Upington, in the Northern Cape.
The CSP plant will be based on linear Fresnel technology and will be the largest linear Fresnel plant in the world.
Linear Fresnel CSP designs use flat glass mirrors to reflect light onto a fluid in a receiver. This particular project will use water as the fluid, which is vaporised to create superheated steam at temperatures of up to 500 °C. The technology will reduce land requirements by an estimated 40% and water consumption by 80%.
